MSc Astrophysics

During the four-semester astrophysics master program, students can develop the ability to think astrophysically and proceed methodically in both theory and practice. The program is divided into to parts: The first two semesters consist of lectures in basic astrophysics and advanced courses in physics, while students can also choose a specialized subject area. Building on the knowledge gained in the first two semesters, these abilities will be strengthened during a year-long research phase which is scheduled for the third and fourth semesters. During this stage, the master thesis shall be completed with accompanying colloquia, tutorials and seminars. The modular design of the master degree program in astrophysics allows the participants to study with emphasis in either experimental or theoretical topics. The primary goal of this course is to provide an overview into the deeper interconnections in astrophysics in a physical context.

Tuition fees

There are no tuition fees for this course. There is, however, a semester fee of 117 € for each student comprising a student services contribution (52 €) and a basic fee for public transportation (65 €).

Admission requirements

Candidates must hold a bachelor or Diplom degree (or equivalent) in physics, astrophysics or meteorology or another mathematical or natural scientific degree. They must also pass a special entrance exam.

Evidence of sufficient knowledge of English:

  • proven either by an university degree at an English-language institution of higher education
  • by a TOEFL total score of at least 80 points (iBT), or an academic IELTS overall band score of 6.5 points. (screenshot or scan of the test result is sufficient!)
  • No other proofs of sufficient command of English can be accepted.
  • If you are not able to provide your TOEFL/IELTS score at the time of application you may upload an informal petition instead on our online-tool which says that you are going to hand in your result after the application deadline via email. (There is no real deadline to hand it in later but we recommend to provide it until end of September).

1st Semester

  • Essentials of advanced Astrophysics  (9 ECTS)
  • Numerical or instrumental laboratory  (9 ECTS)
  • Lecture belonging to the field of statistics or to the field of QM (WT or Summer Term)  (6 ECTS)
  • Modern Physics  (6 ECTS)

2nd Semester

  • Astrophysical basic laboratory  (9 ECTS)
  • Advanced Seminar (“Hauptseminar”)  (3 ECTS)
  • Elective Lecture of Astrophysics with Seminar
  • (ST or Winter Term)   (6 ECTS)
  • Elective Lecture of Astrophysics with Seminar  (6 ECTS)
  • Elective Lecture of Astrophysics with Seminar  (6 ECTS)

3rd and 4th Semester

  • Research project preparation phase (30 ECTS –
  • attendant courses (24 ECTS),
  • attendant lecture (6 ECTS))
  • Master’s Thesis  (30 ECTS)
