Position Summary Information

Department Description TEACCH is a statewide autism program in the School of Medicine providing services for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families as well as providing training and education to community members and professionals (Healthcare, Education, etc.) who work with persons with ASD. TEACCH provides diagnostic evaluations, treatment planning and implementation, education, consultation, supported employment assistance, training and research for this population. Through the combination of clinical service and related research and training, the program has attained an international leadership position in the field of autism.
TEACCH is comprised of an Administration and Research unit, seven regional outpatient clinics located in Asheville, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Greenville and Wilmington, as well as the Carolina Living and Learning Center, a residential/vocational training farmstead facility for adults with ASD, a Supported Employment program that assists adults with ASD find and maintain gainful employment, and also an Early Intervention program that provides in-home based training for preschool aged children with ASD and their families.

Position Description The primary purpose of this position will be to work with adult individuals with autism, in a Residential setting. The job involves supervising adults with autism and providing assistance with their daily needs and training on Residential and Vocational skills. It also involves documentation and administration of medication to clients. The position also has the responsibility of monitoring the outdoor work of the residents in varied weather conditions, and the ability to assist with the upkeep of the houses, gardens and grounds. Another responsibility is accompanying residents on community outings (including shopping trips, recreational outings, church, trash/recycling runs and other planned outings), driving state vehicles as provided by the CLLC.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities The essential skills needed for this position include the ability to directly supervise adults with autism, the ability to provide assistance to them with all their daily needs including personal care, the ability to provide training in the home and on the farm, the ability to protect clients’ rights, the ability to prevent and respond to problem behaviors, the ability to document clients’ activities and behaviors, and the ability to help with upkeep of the house and grounds. This position requires the staff member to supervise and participate in both indoor and outdoor recreation activities on the farm and in community outings. The selected candidate may be required to undergo fingerprinting and a national background check.
Preferred Qualifications Experience working with individuals with autism and /or developmental disabilities in a residential setting is preferred.
Required Licenses/Certifications Valid Driver’s License Required.
Special Physical and Mental Requirements This position requires the ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions and the ability to assist with the upkeep of the houses, gardens and grounds.
