The Ph.D. program in Statistics offered by the DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS, Columbia University prepares students for research careers core mathematics disciplines like in probability and statistics in academia and industry.

The Department of Mathematics along with the Department of Statistics situated at Columbia University offers Master of Arts in Mathematics with specialization in Mathematics of Finance.

The intensive Ph.D. program for full-time students is offered by the department planning careers in research and university teaching. The M.A. degree is earned, as a matter of course, after completing two Residence Units and the written qualifying examination. After fulfilling the requirements for the M.A. degree in Mathematics, a graduate student takes a variety of advanced courses offered by the department and, in some cases, by certain related departments. The student also may participate in seminars related to his or her interests.

Degree Requirements: The requirements listed below for the Ph.D. in Statistics, that include obtaining MA and M.Phil degrees, are special to this department and must be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

For the M.A. Degree: The Potential Students will have to take 7 courses from the core curriculum:

  • Applied Statistics
  • Probability Theory
  • Theoretical Statistics
  • Statistical Computing
  • Stochastic Processes

For the M.Phil. Degree

Financial Aid – Tuition, fees, and a stipend (for up to five years,).

Admissions Requirements

  • Masters in linear algebra or real analysis or statistics and probability.
  • Familiarity with computing and programming is desirable.
  • Experience in other scientific disciplines are also encouraged
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test.
  • GRE Advanced Subject Test in Mathematics is also recommended.
