The University of Groningen is delighted to offer three 3 year PhD Scholarships within the faculty of Philosophy in the Netherlands. Applications are invited from high-quality prospective PhD students with a good fit with the research specialisms and expertise of academic staff.
The aim of the scholarships is to produce research which is world-leading, distinctive, and policy-relevant. With two bachelor and eight master programs, the faculty offers a wide range of courses within the field to about 900 students.
The University of Groningen is a public research university in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands as well as one of its largest. The University of Groningen has ten faculties, nine graduate schools, 27 research centres and institutes, and more than 175-degree programmes.
Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue PhD programme.
Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in the field of Philosophy.
Scholarship Award: The successful candidates will receive a grant of €1,700 per month, with wage tax and social insurance premiums already deducted. They will be required to be resident in Groningen and will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Philosophy. They will initially be offered a scholarship of one year; prolongation of the scholarship for a further two years is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year.
Number of Scholarships: Three scholarships are available.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for scholarship:
Candidates should have completed a master’s degree in Philosophy, preferably a two-year research master or equivalent, by 1 September 2017. They should have an excellent academic record, a very good command of English, and strong academic writing skills.
Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

- A research proposal of up to 2000 words, including a list of potential supervisors at the Faculty of Philosophy
- A writing sample of no more than 5000 words, such as an essay or part of a master’s thesis
- Transcripts of your academic degrees.
