TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme
For young scientists from developing countries (other than Malaysia) who wish to do advanced research in the natural sciences at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Selangor, Malaysia.
Programme Details
- TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowships are based in UPM research laboratories and institutes in Malasia for a least period of six months to a maximum period of twelve months.
- UPM will provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance.
- The award of fellowship is subject to obtaining in due course a final offer letter of admission from UPM that must be approved by UPM University’s Committee. Upon receipt of the UPM-TWAS award letter from TWAS, applicants will need to contact in due course the UPM School of Graduate Studies to apply for final offer letter. In case the application for final offer letter of admission is not approved by UPM, this award will become insignificant and void.
- The language of instruction is English.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for these fellowships must meet following criteria:
- Candidate should be nationals of a developing country (other than Malaysia).
- Candidate must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Malaysia or any developed country.
- Candidate must hold a PhD degree in a field of science or technology.
- Candidate must apply for the fellowship within five years of having obtained a PhD degree in a field of natural sciences
- Candidate will provide proof of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English;
- Candidate will provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of fellowship;
- Candidate should not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship;
- Candidate be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.
- Candidate must be regularly employed in a developing country (other than Malaysia) and have a research assignment there;
- Provide an official Acceptance letter (see sample Acceptance Letter, page 6). The guideline to obtain Acceptance letter is available at School of Graduate Studies, UPM website. The URL link is HERE.
- Please note that applicant must have already contacted a potential host supervisor/professor in UPM before sending their request for an acceptance letter to School of Graduate Studies, UPM.
- The acceptance letter must come from Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, UPM only.

How to Apply
The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 September of each year.
- Candidates should submit Acceptance Letter issued from Dean of graduate studies UPM to TWAS when applying or by deadline at the latest. Without initial acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection.
- Reference letters: Referees must send signed letters on their letter headed paper as attachments via e-mail directly to TWAS. The subject line must contain: UPM/PDoc/candidate’s surname.
- Applications for the TWAS-CSIR Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme should be sent to TWAS only (by email).
