Job description

Postdoctoral researcher: Integrated model guided process optimization of steam cracking furnaces (IMPROOF)

Aim
Evaluate theoretically and experimentally the potential benefit of applying high emissivity coatings, oxy-fuel combustion and 3D reactor designs in steam cracking furnaces.

Justification
Steam cracking is one of the most energy intensive processes in the chemical industry. Although steam cracking technology is considered to be mature, the complexity of the process and the harsh operating conditions allow the implementation of technology developments towards substantial heat transfer enhancement. One of the main objectives of IMPROOF is to increase the energy efficiency of the radiation section of a steam cracking furnace, minimizing exergy losses. A key element to realize this is the use of high emissivity coatings manufactured and studied under real furnace conditions in the project. On the other hand NOx emissions can be reduced by the possible use of oxy-fuel combustion. Finally, the efficiency and selectivity can be improved by applying

Program
Although the benefit of the application of high emissivity coatings is clear they are still rarely applied for steam cracking furnaces. Therefore IMPROOF will assess the results of the application of high emissivity materials on improved refractory materials on TRL5 and TRL6 level. These furnace redesigns of components and process tubes combined with CFD modelling will be a further multiplier for the potential benefit of IMPROOF. IMPROOF seeks to further demonstrate that also existing furnaces can be retrofitted to increase their performance. At the same IMPROOF will result in optimized resource and energy efficiencies, and also less pollutant emissions. A risk is that, as a result of improvements in the radiant section by coating various components with high emissivity products, the amount of heat released to the convective section will be reduced. This will necessitate a re-evaluation of the operation of the convective section which will prompt the evaluation of high emissivity products to improve heat absorption in this area as well.

Nowadays, there is an increased interest towards the development of oxy-fuel combustion, i.e. the process of burning a fuel using pure oxygen instead of air as the primary oxidant. One of the advantages of oxy-fuel combustion is the production of a highly concentrated stream of CO2, ready for capture and storage (CCS). Beside CCS, oxy-fuel combustion has other advantages, such as the possibility to significantly reduce the size of the combustor unit compared to that used in the corresponding air-fired combustion. Another essential question that will be addressed by IMPROOF is if the use of renewable fuels such as bio-gas or bio-oils is actually beneficial to be considered in steam cracking furnaces. Detailed kinetic models and CFD will be used to provide answers to all these questions.

Profile of the candidate

Applicants must possess a PhD in Chemical Engineering or related subject and a TOEFL certificate with a minimum score of 95(iBT) or equivalent. Relevant experience in the area of reactor engineering, kinetics, and/or computational chemistry is strongly recommended. Candidates must have a strong mathematical background and be willing to focus on obtaining quantitative rather than qualitative results.

Job description

Prediction of Turbulent Reactive Flows by means of Numerical Simulations (PRETREF)

Aim
The goal of this PhD is coupling detailed kinetic models for free radical and surface processes with Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) accounting properly for turbulence.

Justification
The 20th century has proven to be a fruitful century in modeling chemical reactors using simplified reactor models and simplified kinetic models. Hence, there’s a good reason to believe that many of those systems are actually far from optimal. Indeed, the supercomputer capabilities in the 21th century make that on a computational level new innovations are possible that 5 years ago one could not even dream of. The current state of the art in CFD makes use almost exclusively of traditional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS). The main limitation of RANS modeling is that RANS variables do not depend on time and only averaged flow fields are obtained of which the accuracy can be debated. It must be clear that an instantaneous and averaged turbulent flow field have not much in common. Also intuitively it seems obvious that certain phenomena can simply not be averaged like ignition, quenching, flow instabilities, acoustic waves and thermoacoustics. Note that implementation of detailed chemistry in CFD is at present almost not done, not even when simple turbulence models are used.

Program
Coupling detailed kinetic models with OpenFOAM accounting properly for turbulence. The approach will be validated using a unique set of newly acquired experimental data on the flow field in well-defined reactor geometries using 2D/3D Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and liquid crystal thermography. Implementation of kinetic models with more than 50 species In OpenFOAM using LES. Therefore a dynamic kinetic model reduction method will be developed for the OpenFoam platform in order to drastically decrease the required CPU time. This will be combinend with the classical tools for obtaining reduced chemistry, i.e.: quasi steady state approximation, rate of production and sensitivity analysis. Evaluate the developed OpenFOAM LES code for low NOx burners, pyrolysis and selected surface reactions.

Job description

Addressing food security issues in the light of the rapid population growth is an increasingly important global challenge. More food will have to be produced in the next 50 years than has been over the past 10,000 years (2008 UN sustainable development forum). One way to achieve this is by managing farm resources site specifically using advanced technologies in precision agriculture. Precision agriculture technologies play an important role in addressing the conflict between producing more whilst operating within a sustainable framework.

Fully funded 5 PhD scholarships in Precision Agriculture are available in Precision Soil and Crop Engineering Group (SiTeMan), within the Department of Soil Management, Faculty of Bioscience Engineering in Ghent University (UGent) in Belgium. We are looking for top MSc students, to work as PhD candidates under a recently funded project by the Flemish Scientific Research (FWO) under the Odysseus I call for proposal 2016, with a total budget of €3.5 M: Towards Establishing a Centre of Site-specific Technology for Soil and Crop Management. The aim of the project is to establish a research platform combining cutting-edge soil and crop sensors, modelling and system control technology for managing farm resources (seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, water, and manure) site-specifically, with the final goal of establishing a precision agriculture centre in Flanders.

The following 5 PhD projects are available under this project:

  1. Site specific fertilisation.
  2. Site specific manure injection.
  3. Site specific pesticide applications.
  4. Site specific soil compaction management.
  5. Site specific seed rate management.

We are looking for top students with a MSc degree obtained between September 2017 and not earlier than September 2014. Successful candidates will have the following responsibilities:

  • Run your PhD project and deliver the project results in a timely manner.
  • Submission of high quality publications in international journals.
  • Link and integrate with research project of the other PhD students under Odysseus project as deemed appropriate.
  • Contribute to group activities as requested by your promoters that are within the remit of the role and the grant, and the associated grade. This may include:
  1. Supporting and collaborating with MSc and PhD students.
  2. Contribution to teaching programmes if requested to do so.
  3. Assist in other activates in the group as deemed necessary.

 

Profile of the candidate

The candidate should fulfil the following requirements:

  • Have or will soon have a MSc degree in Agriculture Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Agronomy, Mechatronics Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
