The Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology (KoRS-CB) offers 14 new scholarships for doctoral researchers for international students. The research projects at KoRS-CB are carried out in the fields of synthetic chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, biomedicine and bioinformatics.

The programme is supported by the German Excellence Initiative. The Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology provides a research-driven doctoral education in the priority topics Synthetic Chemistry, Cellular Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biomedicine and Computational Life Science.

The University of Konstanz is a university in the city of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was founded in 1966, and the main campus on the Gießberg was opened in 1972.

Project summary

Heterogeneous photocatalysis has become a subject of great interest with important potential applications in environment (water and air depollution), solar energy conversion and solar fuel production (mainly H2). Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the most investigated and used semiconductor because of its high photocatalytic activity, stability, low cost, and nontoxicity. Solar light is a green and renewable source of energy that can be used for either water depollution or hydrogen production.

The main challenge of the PhD project will be the design of bioinspired Z-scheme photocatalyst with a Yolk-Schell structure that exhibit high photocatalytic activity for water treatment and hydrogen generation under visible light. The Z-scheme photocatalyst design appears as a promising strategy to mimic Nature (leafs-bioinspired) for hydrogen production and depollution applications.

 

The scalable Z-scheme photocatalyst with an heteronanostructure based on coupling TiO2 with semiconductors having variable band gap and non-noble nanoparticles will be carried out using soft-chemistry (sol-gel process) and radiolysis. A strict control of the synthesis conditions will be performed to adjust the heterojunction connection and nanoparticles to achieve an efficient charge carriers transfer between materials. The Z-scheme photocatalyst will be finally self-assembled as a photonic crystal and the slow photon effect will be also studied.

The charge carriers’ mobility, texture, structure, photocatalytic efficiency as well as the optical properties of the obtained materials will be characterized using Time Resolved Microwave Conductivity (TRMC), UV-visible spectroscopy, TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

The expected synergistic effect between the heterojunction and the non-metallic nanoparticles will be assessed for hydrogen production and depollution process.

Description

The titanium dioxide TiO2 exhibits photocatalytic activity that was first considered harmful, because it leads to the degradation of organic matrices in which the white pigment is incorporated. The ability to use these properties in applications related to the environment and energy, such as the elimination of organic pollutants in water and air or hydrogen production, has generated renewed interest in the scientific community for TiO2.

 

The objective of this work is the development of a mesoporous TiO2-based photonic crystal (Bragg stacks) showing a high photocatalytic activity, photon tenability and activity in the visible range. The development of a material with specific properties requires an understanding of the relationship between the elaboration, structure (crystalline structure and microstructure), the dynamics of charge carriers (electronic properties) and the photocatalytic activity of the material. This requires two steps coupled between them: Elaboration versus Characterization (structural, electronic and photocatalytic).

 

In this work, the mesoporous photonic crystal will be obtained by alternating thin mesoporous films of TiO2 and other semi-conductors using soft-chemistry (sol-gel process). The mesoporous TiO2 films will also be coupled by plasmonic nanoparticles (localized into the pore) by gamma radiolysis of metal complexes. The synthetic procedure will be tuned to insure an optimal film’s interconnection, thickness, crystallinity, optical properties, electron transfer, light harvesting etc.

 

The electronic properties will be studied by Time Resolved Microwave Conductivity (TRMC) to measure the lifetime of charge carriers created by illumination of the photocatalyst. The structure, texture and optical properties of the mesoporous photonic structure will be assed will be characterized using Time Resolved Microwave Conductivity (TRMC), UV-visible spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

 

The photocatalytic properties of the samples will be determined by photodegradation of phenol in water and hydrogen production from methanol.

Helmholtz Zentrum München offers Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Life Sciences (f/m) 2017/0144. Helmholtz Zentrum München announces the 3rd call of its international Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

Number of fellowships: up to 8 highly talented postdocs in the development of a competitive scientific profile for a successful scientific career in academic research or industry.

Qualifications:

  • Applications are invited from highly qualified and motivated early-career scientists of all nationalities.
  • Applicant must have received PhD degree within the last three years or who will receive their doctoral degree by the start of the program and who have not been recruited to the Center for more than 6 months.
  • Applicant must hold Doctoral or equivalent degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Physics, Mathematics, Veterinary or Human Medicine or related life sciences
  • Applicant must demonstrate strong interest in basic and translational research
  • Applicant must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Applicant must possess excellent English skills
